Clinical Value of Serum Copper, Ceruloplasmin and Alkaline Phosphatase a,-Isoenzyme in Cancer Patients

Abstract
The levels of serum copper and ceruloplasmin and the electrophoretic analyses of serum alkaline phosphatase were determined before diagnosis and, later, in 151 patients with various cancer during chemotherapy, including 44 patients of stomach cancer, 35 patients of lung cancer, 18 patients of hepatobiliary cancer and so on. Also serum copper and ceruloplsasmin levels were determined in 51 healthy adults.
The results obtained were as follows:
1) The mean value of serum copper and ceruloplasmin in the healthy adults was 105pg/dl and 21 mg/dl, respectively.
2) In various cancer patients the serum copper and ceruloplasmin were markedly higher than in healthy adults and raised copper levels were found in over 80% of all but patients with pancreatic cancer.
3) In cancer patients whose serum alkaline phosphatase is within normal range, alkaline phosphatase a -isoenzyme is a valuable test as an aid to discrimination of metastatic liver cancer and gave agreement in 86%, predictive value of negative in 97% and predictive value of positive in 47%.
4) Serum copper and ceruloplasmin levels are helpful in determining activity of cancer and response to chemotherapy in patients with various cancer.
